Why we built this
The stokvel is one of South Africa’s great institutions: neighbours, colleagues, and families pooling money and discipline, month after month, for groceries, funerals, December, and futures. The model has never been the problem.
The administration is the problem. The notebook that can be lost or quietly edited. The spreadsheet only one person understands. The group chat where a decision from March is buried under a thousand messages. The member who has to ask — and trust — instead of simply seeing. The honest treasurer who carries suspicion they never earned, because the book can’t prove them right.
So we built Stok-Vel: one platform that keeps the records, the roles, the communication, and the reporting for the whole group — shared, timestamped, tamper-evident.
